Dog License

dog tagDocuPet

DocuPet is the official licensing partner of the Butler County Auditor's Office. Your pet's tag will be mailed to you by DocuPet.

Why License?

  • Ohio law requires dogs older than three months to have a valid dog's license.
  • Proper identification is critical to getting pets home safe and reducing shelter intakes.
  • Proceeds from dog licensing help fund the critical animal welfare work of the Animal Friends Humane Society and the Butler County Dog Wardens.
How to License

  • The fastest and easiest way to license or renew is online.
  • In person licensing is available at the following locations (you will still receive your tag in the mail):
    • Ace Hardware - Liberty Twp.
    • Ace Hardware - West Chester Twp.
    • Al Joe's - Hamilton
    • Animal Friends Humane Society
    • Butler County Auditor's Office
    • Butler County Dog Warden

Tags that Work Hard

  • Each tag comes equipped with DocuPet’s HomeSafe™ 24/7 lost pet service to help get lost pets home quickly and is linked to your pet’s online profile.
  • Choose the standard county tag or upgrade to a designer option. DocuPet donates 20% of every designer tag purchase to Animal Friends.
  • For an additional fee, you have the option to personalize the back of the tag with your pet’s name and your phone number. This allows your pet’s license tag to double as their identification tag.
  • Tags can be reused year after year; however, you are still required to renew your dog's license annually even if you decide to keep an existing tag. If your pet's tag becomes unreadable in any way, we certainly recommend that you get a new one. You will have the option to have a new tag sent to you when you renew your pet's license each year. If you encounter a problem outside of the renewal period, please contact our office to get a replacement tag.
Lost Pet & Privacy Settings

Each pet's tag is associated with an online profile that can be made viewable to those who look up a tag ID on our website. The default setting is to only display your contact information when your pet is lost. Please know that you will need to file a lost pet report from within your account in order for a potential pet finder to contact you directly. To report a lost pet, login to your account, navigate to My Pets, and submit a Lost Pet Report.

Under Profile Settings, you have the option to change your privacy setting to always display your contact information. Information that is made public can only be found by looking up a pet's tag ID directly.

Optimize Your Profile

The key to ensuring HomeSafe™ works as quickly as possible is to have your DocuPet profile filled out with all the pertinent information. To optimize your profile, we recommend that you include multiple phone numbers and enter the names of your pet guardians (partner, neighbor, friend, dog walker, etc.).
